During lesson time, we were given the task to create a photo which conveyed key aspects of a genre of our choice within 5 minutes, in other words, we were to set up a shot with organised props and characters which conveyed meaning for a certain genre, which in our case was horror/mystery.
We quickly thought of key conventions and ideas which were seen within this genre and chose a helpless victim, a violent antagonist, a signature weapon, and a dark or mysterious setting.
To use these ideas, we based the image in a room and removed all lighting apart from an open door which created sinister shadows and shapes. We placed the 'helpless' character in a relaxed and every-day position so he appeared unaware of what was potentially about to happen which is often shown in horror films, our antagonist was given a white mask due to many stereotypical villains being unknown, or masked. As well as this, we gave him a weapon of a hockey stick and placed him out of sight of the victim but ready to attack.
From this task we learnt that lighting has a significant impact on how a shot or scene appears and can have a considerable influence on the genre or feel of the image. We should consider this when filming our final production.
